Session 12: Biofuels in Aviation

Sustainability and climate protection are also the decisive benchmarks for the future in aviation, just as they are in other sectors. Increasing efficiency and reducing consumption have been priorities for the major airlines for years. Much has been achieved in recent years: while aviation transport volumes have increased worldwide, kerosine consumption has risen by only three percent. However, in the light of forecast growth, efficiency alone will not be enough to achieve a sustainable reduction in CO2 emissions from air transport. Airlines therefore intend to make growing air traffic levels sustainable by using alternative fuels. To achieve this, increasing shares of renewable kerosene are essential. That is because new forms of propulsion, such as electric or hydrogen drives, cannot be expected to be operational in air transport in the coming years, in contrast to other modes of transport. Within the framework of the digital “Fuels of the Future” conference, various presentations will discuss which feedstocks can be used to produce sustainable fuels for air transport and what form concepts for the approval and fuel design of sustainable aviation fuels will take.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Hornung, Director of the Fraunhofer UMSICHT is one of the world’s leading experts on conversion of biogenic waste into fuels and developed the thermo-catalytic process TCR®. In his lecture he will report on sustainable fuels from biogenic residues.

Sustainable aviation fuels, their certification, fuel design and reduction of climate impact will be addressed by Dr. Patrick Le Clerq, German Aerospace Center e. V. (DLR). He will present findings from DLR’s research flights with NASA to measure emissions from air traffic. These flights at typical cruising altitudes measured the emissions of a biofuel/kerosene mixture and the impact on the formation and properties of contrails. The NASA-led flight campaign involved more than one hundred scientists and technicians.

“Green Deal and coronavirus: What next for climate change mitigation in the air transport sector?” is the topic of the third presentation by Uta Maria Pfeiffer, German Aviation Association e. V. (BDL). She will discuss prospects and initiatives for sustainable air transport from the perspective of national airlines.

By 2025, renewable fuels are expected to account for 10 percent of the jet fuel used in Germany. In his presentation Siegfried Knecht, CEO Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e. V. (aireg) will discuss how this can be achieved. aireg aims to promote research, production and use of alternative aviation fuels in Germany.

Session 13: Biofuels in agriculture and forestry

Biofuels are the first step towards the requisite diversification and decarbonisation of fuel supply in agriculture and forestry, and, for the time being, the most effective in terms of volume, not only in Germany but also worldwide. Recent years have seen further advances in technical developments in biofuel production and use. Agricultural and forestry machinery can now be operated with the various biofuels without any difficulties, thanks to production of high-quality biofuels in accordance with established standards – Biodiesel DIN EN 14214, Rapeseed oil fuel DIN 51605, Vegetable oil fuel DIN 51623, and Biomethane fuel - CNG - DIN 51624 – as well as innovations in engine technology.

Thanks to use of sustainable biofuels, agriculture and forestry can make a significant contribution to climate, soil, and water protection and to conservation of fossil resources. Rapeseed oil and vegetable oil fuels, for example, are characterised by very good biodegradability compared to fossil diesel and constitute a very low risk of water pollution.

Furthermore, when it comes to the sectoral greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets for agriculture and forestry, biofuels can make a verifiable contribution to climate protection that can be rapidly implemented.

The agricultural machinery industry is also very keen to reduce GHG emissions from agricultural and forestry machinery, due to the voluntary commitment made by the industry, along with the future EU fleet target. That creates a win-win situation for agriculture and the agricultural machinery industry. The prerequisite for success on this front is a comprehensive increase in the use of biofuels in agriculture and forestry.

Session 13 “Biofuels in agriculture and forestry” on 22.01.2021 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. moderated by Prof. Dr. Peter Pickel, John Deere GmbH & Co. KG, will present and examine ways of achieving this successfully in the following papers:
